An adventurous elopement at an alpine lake in Telluride, Colorado.
When Nicole and Brian reached out to me, they already had their entire wedding day planned and just needed an elopement photographer. I was STOKED because this Colorado hike had been on my bucket list, but I hadn’t made it there yet. It was an immediate yes for me!
Here was the plan: Arrive at trailhead in Telluride at 9am, hike 8 miles roundtrip with 2,500 feet of elevation gain, say wedding vows to each other above the first alpine lake, celebrate their marriage at the shoreline of the lake. The day went EXACTLY as planned. We started out the hike and made the trek 4 miles straight uphill (a typical Colorado mountain hike.) We hiked through the forest for most of it, getting peeks of the mountains through open tree lines, and arrived to the base of the first of three lakes. The real way to see the beautiful blue color of this alpine lake is to hike above it, so that’s what we did. We kept going uphill until we found the perfect overlook for Nicole and Brian to say their vows to each other. They did so by themselves, as I photographed with a zoom lens in the distance so I could give them privacy. We took some photos up above and then hiked back down to celebrate. They packed a charcuterie lunch, mini bottles of champagne, and sour gummy worms and pecan pie for dessert. Lastly, they of course had to take a dip in the lake – I mean, how could they NOT? It was a perfect day of just the two of them, doing exactly what they loved the most – experiencing a beautiful new place and doing an incredible hike together – except this time they got married in the middle of it.
